FAQ

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a process in which a mixture of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and applied to metal parts then baked in an oven from 375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The hear and time in the oven varies depending on the size and thickness of the parts being powder coated.

What are the benefits of powder coating?

Powder coated parts have a much stronger coating and are more resistant to fading, chipping and scratching. Powder coating stands up to the elements much more than other paint processes. Powder coating is earth friendly. Liquid finishes contains Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), while powder coating contains no solvents and virtually NO VOC's. Powder coating is the green alternative to metal finishing.

How are parts prepped prior to powder coating?

Prepping is one of the most important parts of powder coating. It will make all the difference on the finish and longevity of your parts. Most parts are Media Blasted, but depending on the parts, some are to delicate and need to be degreased and washed then dried in the oven. Powder Craft Industries highly trained staff will also meticulously hand sand parts for that beautiful finish that is expected.

What if my parts are already powder coated?

Depending on the parts. Some can be media blasted, some are too tough and need to be chemically stripped. We do not do the chemical stripping in house but work closely with a company that we trust and can arrange for the parts to be taken then brought back from being chemically stripped.

Can you mask off areas which need to be powder free?

Yes. We use a high temperature silicone tape that will not leave any residue on your parts. We also use silicone plugs and caps for threaded holes and bolts. Powder Craft industries highly trained staff has great knowledge of where and how to mask critical areas. If we have any concerns, we will always talk to you before any work is performed.

How long does the process take?

Powder Craft industries will typically have your parts back to you in 3 to 4 working days. We will always work with you if your parts are needed sooner. A 24 hour turn around is available for an expedite fee.

Will I have different colors to choose from?

Yes, we have hundreds of colors to choose from. We carry glosy, semi gloss, satin, matt, sparkling metallics, textures, wrinkles, candy colors and unique colors created with two coat application. We also offer custom color matching. If we do not have the color you are looking for, we deal with every major powder manufactureer, so if it's available we will find it.

What is Media Blasting?

Media Blasting is a surface treatment process widely used in a variety of different industries with many diverse purposes. Media Blasting is a process which an abrasive media is accelerated through a nozzle by means of compressed air. The abrasive used varies on the material it is being used on and the surface treatment required. Media Blasting is a vital process used not only to remove rust and old paint but to prepare surfaces for high performance coatings or to treat products to give them the luster and or surface desired.

What are some uses for Media Blasting?

Surface preparation prior to powder coating.

Removal of rust, scale, sand or paint.

Removal or burrs or edge profiling on machined parts.

Providing a matte surface finish to parts.

Providing frosting on glass or plexiglass.

Providing a weather look on pieces of wood or wood furniture.

Removal of mold flash from plastic components.
